Walking 20 Minutes Per Day Improves Heart Health for At-Risk Groups

Taking a brisk 20-minute walk every day may significantly improve heart health for people who are at high risk of having cardiovascular issues, according to a recent scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA).

The statement identified several groups at higher than normal risk for heart disease or death from heart problems: older adults (age 65+), Black adults, people with disabilities, individuals with lower-level education or income, and those with mental health disorders like depression.

Engaging in regular physical activity remains one of the best ways to improve heart health, but the most at-risk groups for heart problems often face barriers to reaching the current recommendations for physical activity (150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week).

The study authors point out that even lower amounts of physical activity— like walking 20 minutes a day— can still provide significant benefits for heart health. They recommend that at-risk individuals commit to an exercise routine and also that urban and rural communities provide better options for easy-access exercise programs.

Thinking Positively About Aging Could Protect Brain Function

Age-related mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is widely assumed to be irreversible, but new research indicates that positive age beliefs could contribute to recovery. Those with positive views about aging were 30% more likely to regain normal cognition than those with negative views and also had a shorter recovery time.

The study included over 1700 participants, all aged 65 or older. Each participant was evaluated using the Attitude toward Aging subscale and divided into one of two groups: a positive age-belief group and a negative-age belief group.

Researchers used a 12-year follow up program to evaluate ongoing cognitive function, finding in the process that the positive age-belief group was less likely to develop MCI as well having improved recovery from it.

According to Dr. Becca Levy, a study author and professor, previous research suggests that age-related beliefs can be modified, meaning that “age-belief interventions at the individual and societal levels could increase the number of people who experience cognitive recovery.”

Heart Attacks May Accelerate Cognitive Decline

Some new research indicates that heart health may have a big impact on brain health. More specifically, researchers found that having a heart attack was linked to a faster rate of cognitive decline. The decline happened over time following the heart attack, rather than right away, but the overall impairment to brain function occurred much more quickly when compared to the brain function of those who did not go through a heart attack.
